United:
As wheels spin and the path opens up to a group of cyclists the machines they ride become more than just a mode of transportation; they create a bond that transcends the societal divisions that are pointlessly applied to people. The group ride is a revered connector of people that all speak the same language, one of camaraderie and the search for good times. Bicycles help us weave together a tight knit community of old and new friends and then bond our souls together in a marriage of a wheels and journeys like nothing else does.
At the shop I get to talk to people from all walks of life. Homeless people to professional athletes, teachers, and blue collar technicians that keep the economy flowing. When a new customer comes into the shop there is a pattern that emerges after a short greeting. Often times it is predictable and it manifests into a quick back and forth conversation and evolves into a photo of their problem being shared and we find a solution. Most often this solution is simply a 26x2.0 tube. Other times a shop regular will stop by for an extended visit and we'll discuss the local trails and who is riding fast these days. Maybe we'll even get into something unrelated to bicycles, but by the end of the conversation we'll revert back to the union that joins us, the bicycle. Perhaps we'll make plans for the Saturday ride or an early morning weekday ride before work. In any case we end the conversation with laughs and carry on about the day.
An oft misquoted saying, the author is historically lost, but it is still relevant today is, "the place you're looking for is the place you're looking from." My epicenter is the bike shop. It's where I need to be at this time in my life. Sharing the time I have with others, learning new things, and helping people get the solutions they need is ultimately satisfying on a level I cannot describe. When a perceived problem arises the bicycle gives us a moment in our day to simplify our thoughts and get resolution on what needs to be done to alleviate the issue. The process of living creates joy and happiness in our lives and of course it creates chaos of varying levels that can be cleared up with a short bike ride. The clarity of mind that comes from a solo ride is superb and needed for all of us. Make a plan to go on the local group rides, but also make a plan to go for a solo ride. As you look for a trail or path to ride visualize the angle that you're looking at life from and ask yourself if you need to adjust something to make the moment or future what you want it to be. I bet the answer is is looking right at you.
Peace,
Paul
